As part of New York City’s Living Libraries program, Settlement Housing Fund (SHF) and Kalel Companies (Kalel) will transform the Grand Concourse Library into The Heartwood—a vibrant new community hub that pairs a state-of-the-art public library with approximately 113 permanently affordable, rent-stabilized homes above.
In addition to delivering much-needed affordable housing, The Heartwood will feature a new 17,500-square-foot library designed to serve children, teens, and families through dynamic, flexible spaces. With a double-height adult reading room, modern technology, and a range of multipurpose meeting and study areas, the new library will be a lasting civic asset for the West Bronx for generations to come.
